ABPI suggests changes to pharma dispensing process 07/02/2012

Companies that add pharmaceutical booklet labels to their products could be set to see changes in how medicines are sold around the world.

According to the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI), pharmacies could place a stronger focus on patients if dispensing and wholesaling were treated as two different areas, the Pharma Times reports.

Speaking at an inquiry into medicinal shortages by the All-Party Pharmacy Group at the House of Commons, the group said this separation should be enshrined in law.

The ABPI argued that this would help suppliers of pharmaceutical products work out where supplies are limited, as well as make any purchases more transparent and open.

As a result, regulators would be able to follow a paper trail if they wanted to scrutinise a particular organisation more closely.

This comes after Stephen Whitehead, chief executive of the ABPI, hailed the pharma industry for its contribution to the UK economy, describing it as a driver of growth and job creation.
