Braille labels added to biscuit packaging 09/02/2012

Food manufacturers may want to follow the lead of one biscuit company by adding Braille labels to its products.

Paterson Arran Ltd, which makes shortbread fingers, believes conveying information on product packaging using this system can be a good way to meet the needs of blind and partially sighted people.

As a result, it is in the process of changing the packaging on its various ranges to incorporate Braille.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People has hailed the move, saying it is "delighted" to see a company trying to "improve the shopping experience" for the visually impaired.

"Blind and partially sighted consumers should be supported to shop independently," said Fazilet Haidi, spokeswoman for the charity.

Amy Coles, Paterson Arran's marketing manager, added: "We are always looking for ways to satisfy customer demands."

The move could prompt rival companies in the food sector to follow suit and add Braille labels to their products.
