Budget healthy food ranges draw praise 06/02/2012

Budget products could be better for supermarket shoppers who consider how healthy a product is when reading the printed labels on the packaging.

According to research commissioned by the Sun, the sugar, fat and calorie content in supermarket own brand food tends to be higher in the more expensive healthy eating ranges.

Shopping website mySupermarket, which carried out the study, therefore believes that looking at the price could be a good way to find the healthiest options.

"There is a misconception that you have to spend a lot of money to eat well," said James Ford, spokesman for the group.

"But budget ranges are actually often better for you."

The findings showed that this trend was particularly apparent in the Extra Special range of pasta sauces at Asda, which have a much greater fat and sugar content than the cheapest alternative.

Similarly, Sainsbury's Taste the Difference cookies were found to be more fattening than those in the Basics range.
