Businesses urged to comply with intellectual property laws 06/04/2011

Companies that are looking at adding royal imagery to their printed labels in the run-up to Prince William's wedding have been reminded that some logos are trademarked.

According to Manchester-based law firm Pannone, businesses need to consider intellectual property laws when designing special editions of their products to mark the occasion.

A "stipulated souvenir list" has been issued by the royal family, it stated, so companies are entitled to use approved images such as photographs, emblems and coats of arms.

However, Pannone warned that if manufacturers produce memorabilia that does not follow the guidelines, they could be punished.

Melanie McGuirk, an intellectual property specialist at the company, told the Manchester Evening News: "They may face tough financial penalties or even criminal prosecution."

She added that the rules surrounding the use of royal photographs, arms and emblems on products are "very strict".

Prince William and Kate Middleton will tie the knot on April 29th, a day which prime minister David Cameron predicted would be a "happy and momentous occasion".
