Pharmaceutical trials are being hindered by existing European regulations, a cancer charity has warned.
According to Cancer Research UK, the Clinical Trials Directive has led to the cost of manpower doubling since its introduction eight years ago, the Telegraph reports.
This, it said, means the cost of running its portfolio of trials has gone up by a similar proportion during this period.
Professor Peter Johnson, chief clinician at Cancer Research UK, believes this is making it very difficult for some organisations to continue carrying out their studies.
This could potentially affect demand for pharmaceutical booklet labels across the world, if groups abandon or postpone trials for financial reasons.
"We are driving a Rolls Royce organisation down a cart track, in terms of bureaucracy and impediments that we have to overcome along the way," Professor Johnson said.
He added that the increase in the amount of red tape since the introduction of the Clinical Trials Directive has been "huge".
