Companies may wish to be more careful about the information they put on to their printed labels after a business found itself in trouble with Trading Standards.
Rodda's, which produces clotted cream, had taken on products from Wiseman's Dairies earlier this year after acquiring the company, BBC News reports.
However, although its ingredients now come from Cornwall, it continued to use the name 'Definitely Devon'.
Despite the firm insisting that it was simply trying to prevent waste by using up existing packaging, Trading Standards ruled that the printed labels were detrimental to Devon farmers and would mislead consumers.
Rodda's avoided legal action, but must now change its packaging to read 'Westcountry Clotted Cream'.
Alternatively, it could add peelable labels clearly stating 'Made In Cornwall' to existing packs, Trading Standards said.
In April 2011, Greg Knight, Conservative MP for East Yorkshire, criticised manufacturers for labelling meat products as British when they are not.
