A company based in Finland is carrying out research in order to create food packaging that is better for old people to use, something that could affect printed labels in this country.
The Seniori-Sapuska project (Foods for Seniors) by VTT Technical Research Centre wants to launch boxes, jars and bags that are easy to open and have clear product information displayed on their peelable labels, FoodProductionDaily.com reports.
Senior scientist Dr Raija-Liisa Heinio said there does not seem to be anything like this at present, meaning there is a gap in the market.
She is collecting stories from consumers to facilitate the design process, but added that anything created will not be too niche.
"User-friendly packages will be valid for all other consumers too," she added.
Meanwhile, Innova Market Insights has told FoodManufacture.co.uk that products designed for over-65s will be one of the key food trends to dominate 2012.
Products with reduced acid, special nutritional formulas, easy to swallow textures and light packaging will increase by 50 per cent, it said.
