Could plastic jars usurp glass as supermarket bestsellers? 12/10/2011

Printed labels attached to glass jars for things like pasta and jam could become a thing of the past in supermarkets all over the world after the announcement of a new product.

Amcor Rigid Plastics, based in Australia, said it has used blow-trim technology to create a PET plastic container that mimics glass but has more benefits than the traditional packaging material.

For instance, the plastic containers are lighter, easier to open and better for allowing all of the product to be evacuated.

They are also not able to be smashed and are easier to recycle.

Ron McFarlane, Amcor principal engineer, said the technology has "all the desirable consumer advantage" and hopes it will be introduced in stores everywhere in the future.

To promote new-look products, manufacturers could consider giveaways using Fix-a-Form labels to drive sales.

Hamelin Paperbrands is currently doing this with its Black n' Red executive notebooks, with customers having the chance to win a BlackBerry PlayBook.
