Could special printed labels be essential in fight against fake alcohol? 19/12/2011

More brands may be thinking of adding special printed labels to their alcohol products in order the show they are not fakes.

This comes after the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) said people need to be on their guard in the UK after a boom in illegal drinks like vodka being sold in off-licences and other stores, BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat reports.

Officials say they have found thousands of bottles of counterfeit alcohol over the past few months, with 2,000 seized in November alone.

The liquids can contain harmful chemicals such as those found in cleaning products and nail varnish remover, which may cause blindness, organ failure or even death.

TSI chief executive Ron Gainsford said: "We are very concerned about this trend in the availability of fake alcohol. It is not just about false bargains; counterfeit spirits and wine could be lethal."

Last month, the Food Standards Agency also warned people to check the peelable labels of the alcohol they buy carefully to ensure it is not fake.
