Counterfeit alcohol 'has poor quality labels' 13/02/2012

Poor quality printed labels could be a clue that an alcoholic product is not genuine, a local authority has advised.

According to Lincolnshire County Council, there are a number of "tell-tale signs" that can help to identify counterfeit beverages, the Spalding Guardian reports.

Emma Milligan, the authority's senior trading standards officer, said a loose cap, sediment in spirits and an unusually low price can also serve as clues.

Indeed, she noted that if the price appears "too good to be true", it is probably a counterfeit product that is being sold.

Ms Milligan warned that fake drinks can often be harmful to a person's health if they are consumed.

Indeed, she revealed some of the bottles that have been seized by the council in the last few years have contained "toxic chemicals used in cleaning products".

The trading standards official said ingesting these substances can be fatal or cause blindness and irreversible liver damage.
