David Blunkett commends Braille 15/02/2012

Manufacturers may wish to add Braille labels to their products after the system was commended by a blind politician.

David Blunkett, a former education and home secretary, has told BBC News that he is very grateful Braille has been developed.

He acknowledged that while it can be a "slow" medium, it is necessary and one that has been beneficial for him.

Indeed, Mr Blunkett has often used Braille print to aid him in speeches to the House of Commons.

Using Braille labels could therefore be a good way for companies to attract and engage with visually impaired consumers.

"I would say that a reasonably fast print reader is twice as fast as I am," Mr Blunkett commented.

He added that he found it difficult to make "carefully drafted statements" to read at the despatch box in parliament.

As a result, Mr Blunkett tended to make notes in Braille instead and rely on these while addressing MPs.
