Walmart's addition of healthy eating ratings to the printed labels on food products has been tentatively backed by a healthcare professional.
According to Dr Darwin Deen, it is a good idea to get an independent view of how healthy a piece of food is in order to help people improve their lifestyles, ABC News reports.
However, he said more information of how Walmart will implement the scheme still needs to be unveiled.
"As always, the devil is in the details," Dr Deen stated.
Leslie Dach, Walmart's executive vice-president of corporate affairs, added that the company's effort to encourage people to eat more healthily was "inspired by our customers".
He also stressed that the Great For You initiative has been "informed by the latest food science and policy".
This comes after Arlene McCarthy, an MEP who represents north-west England, said limits on what claims food manufacturers can make on printed labels need to be put in place to stop consumers being misled.
