The printed labels of Famous Grouse whisky could soon be attached to much lighter bottles after the company revealed a new breakthrough in packaging.
A glass vessel has been produced that weighs just 34g, a 14 per cent reduction on the traditional bottles and something that was previously thought to be impossible.
Mike Rose from Edrington, which developed the new packaging, said: "We set out to prove that it was possible to produce a glass bottle under 400g which still supports premium features."
They will be rolled out in Scottish supermarkets first and may then be introduced throughout Britain soon.
If Famous Grouse swaps to the new technology completely, the company will save 2,160 tonnes of glass every year.
Last month, the company unveiled its newest product, Black Grouse - Alpha Edition for travel retail.
It may wish to promote both of these breakthroughs using customer printed labels such as the Auto-collar, which is specially designed for application to bottleneck products.
