Frankincense could lead to new arthritis treatment 23/06/2011

Pharma Fix-a-Form labels for arthritis medication could soon feature frankincense, if new research from Cardiff University comes to fruition.

Scientists at the university have been investigating the natural substance after finding that Somali communities have long been using it to ease the symptoms of arthritis.

Dr Emma Blain explained that by using chemical extraction techniques, her team found that an extract of rare frankincense species Boswellia frereana inhibited the production of inflammatory molecules in the joints.

In turn, this prevented the breakdown of cartilage tissue which causes sufferers pain.

It is hoped that new treatments may be developed using the discovery.

"The search for new drugs to alleviate the symptoms of conditions like inflammatory arthritis and osteoarthritis is a priority area for scientists," Dr Blain commented.

A recent poll by The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists found that regular wearing of high heels is causing more women to suffer from arthritis.
