Green expert calls for better labelling of beauty products 09/08/2011

The manufacturers of beauty and skincare products may be thinking about altering their peelable labels after the industry was criticised by one expert.

Paul Crawford, head of regulatory and environmental services at the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA), told the Daily Mail that the term 'organic' is used so vaguely that it has become a minefield for consumers.

For instance, the article pointed out, cosmetics firms can currently describe a product as such even if it only contains tiny amount of organic ingredients, with some companies making ten per cent the benchmark.

Mr Crawford said he thinks the fact that there are many commercial standards for the phrase needs to be addressed.

"The CTPA supports the development of a common standard for natural and organic cosmetics by the International Standards Organisation," he commented.

This comes after Steve Mojo from the Biodegradable Products Institute told Plastics News that many members of the public do no really know what terms such as 'biodegradable' and 'bio-based' mean because they are so rarely explained.
