Women have been urged to rest their high heels as often as possible or risk consulting Pharma Fix-a-Form labels for arthritis medication in the future.
A poll by The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists found that a quarter of females wear vertiginous shoes every day, even though they may have to be on their feet for long periods at work.
High heels place pressure on the joints of the feet, ankles and knees and can lead to osteoarthritis, the organisation said.
Despite this, 22 per cent of respondents thought arthritis was an unavoidable part of ageing.
Podiatrist Professor Anthony Redmond recommended round-toed shoes with only two to three-centimetre heels and a sole with shock absorption.
"Choosing the right footwear will help minimise the stress placed on the feet and joints during everyday activity and helps reduce the risk of injury and joint damage," he added.
According to Arthritis charities, there are currently ten million people in the UK living with the condition.
