Innovative pouch for protein drinks voted most interesting development last year 09/01/2012

A clever pouch for dispensing protein drinks in a healthcare setting has been revealed as the most popular packaging design in 2011 by one source.

Healthcare Packaging magazine said the hot-fill stand-up pouch created by Protica for its Sunkist range was the most viewed item on its website last year as readers sought out designs that would help them create the perfect materials to support their brands.

The pouch holds 48 servings of a fortified protein drink and features foil for gas barrier purposes.

A tap-style dispensing method and a two-year shelf-life may also have been features that attracted those interested in packaging innovation.

In 2011, readers also sought out articles on anti-counterfeiting, shipping temperature-sensitive goods and serialisation.

Although pouches may be best for dispensing liquids and gels, their limited space and awkward shape can make it hard to provide on-pack information.

Fix-a-Form booklet labels could be one solution, as they allow for up to 36 small pages of text to be attached to any packaging and can also accommodate questionnaires and coupons.
