Intelligent barcodes and QR codes on printed labels could open up new channels of communication between manufacturers and customers, according to one expert.
Scott Morris from the University of Illinois, an expert on the history and evolution of packaging, said products could feature information about where their ingredients came from and how to recycle the box or carton.
He explained that companies have a lot to gain by adding smart barcodes to their peelable labels, including finding out more about the consumers who buy them and increasing the accountability of the company.
"You're not just dealing with a can of soup, a bottle of pills or an aircraft part. You're dealing with the whole global economy all at once," Mr Morris commented.
Earlier this month, Michele Bosc, marketing director of the Chateau des Charmes vineyard in Canada, told the Globe and Mail that QR codes can increase product engagement by getting buyers involved with competitions and using money-off vouchers.
