Is supermarket paving the way for more Braille labels? 19/09/2011

A supermarket could be paving the way for more Braille printed labels after introducing new signage in one of its stores.

Bethan Wilson, the manager of the Woolton Sainsbury's store in Liverpool, was keen to provide a better service for its non-sighted customers, as the Royal School for the Blind and Bradbury Fields Blind Association are both located close by.

She lobbied the head office for permission to bring in signage that had Braille panels below the traditional wording and eventually, the move was agreed upon.

Now, each sign on the supermarket's aisles has information in Braille about what products are located there and where to find other items.

"This really shows that we are delivering a great customer experience to all our customers and offering a more inclusive environment to the local community," commented Ms Wilson.

Although pharma labels are required by law to feature Braille information, food products are not.

However, this move could encourage manufacturers to add it to their own printed labels.

Currently, the Royal National Institute for the Blind recommends that blind people use specially-adapted miniature label-making machines to add their own signage to what they have bought.
