John Smith's ale gets packaging revamp 23/12/2011

People who buy John Smith's Extra Smooth will have to look for different packaging and printed labels from now on.

Manufacturer Heineken UK said it is rolling out a new design for its multipacks that features a photograph of a pint of real ale, Off Licence News reports.

Senior brand manager Karen Crowley explained the image will remind customers that the drink is ideal for consumption at home.

"The reaction to the shot of a perfectly poured pint on the packs was extremely positive, with those surveyed agreeing that it conveyed a sense of smoothness," she added.

It is hoped that the simple nature of the design will help people buying the ale as a gift too.

Appealing to home-based drinkers could be essential in the current economic climate, as recent research from Mintel found beer-drinking has fallen by a quarter since 2006.

This was attributed to fewer people going out to drink in pubs.
