Food that has been genetically engineered (GE) or contains products that have been may need to have printed labels that advise consumers, if a current campaign is successful.
In the US, the Food and Drug Administration is voting on an act know colloquially as the Consumer Right To Know Act so Film Inc have launched a campaign called Just Label It.
As part of the campaign, filmmaker Robert Kenner urges consumers to fight for their right to know whether they are eating GE foods or not.
In the short film, Gary Hirshberg, chairman of Stonyfield and a founder of Just Label It said that a generation of people are growing up eating GE foods without anyone knowing what the long-term risks may be.
"Until we have no doubt that GE crops are safe to eat, consumers should have a choice about whether we want to eat them. GE foods must be labeled. Consumers need to know," he explained.
If the campaign is triumphant, food producers will need to state on printed labels whether GE products are included.
