Cereal manufacturer Kellogg's has revealed it is to revamp its printed labels and add vitamin D to some of its products after doctors highlighted an alarming rise in cases of rickets.
The childhood condition was largely wiped out after the Second World War, but more infants are again developing it, with experts attributing the increase to too much time spent indoors and not enough healthy foods, leading to vitamin D deficiency.
Kellogg's already added vitamin D to its Corn Flakes earlier this year, but it has now said it will also do the same with Coco Pops and Rice Krispies in a bid to help children get more nutrients.
The printed labels on Corn Flakes had graphics added to them to illustrate the extra ingredients.
However, with a new study from the Journal of the American Dietetic Association suggesting that consumers do not always read nutritional information on packaging, it could be a good idea to produce booklet labels containing the facts as well as an incentive such as a money-off voucher.
