Local engineering firm bucks the downturn to invest in new mill 03/02/2010

Denny Bros's sister company Fix-a-Form International Ltd, engineering and multi-page label specialists as well as licensor to a global network of printing companies, has recently bucked the down-turn by investing in the latest state-of-the-art Vertical Milling Centre, adding significantly to their machining capacity.

One of just a handful in East Anglia, the £100,000+ investment will be used extensively to produce their custom designed machine components and spare parts for their global network of label printing clients.

The US designed and built Haas VF8 model VMC has an unusually large 1.6m x 1.02m table capability and includes a 40 tool carousel with an average tool change speed of 3 seconds and a 10,000rpm spindle, providing an extremely efficient way to manufacture the unusually large components made by the company.

Machine shop supervisor Justin Reynold’s commented: “This represents a major investment for us and will cut down the amount of tool changes and material handling in some instances by around 75%. The machine’s unique abilities and large table size means that it can handle plates and materials that most mills cannot cope with. This will result in spare capacity which we believe will be of great benefit to other local engineering companies looking to outsource specialist work.”

Managing Director Andrew Denny added: “Despite the worldwide economic downturn we believe demand for our offering will grow in the long term and so now is the right time to invest, particularly as this asset improves our efficiencies significantly.”
