Marks and Spencer go green for strawberries 10/01/2012

Marks and Spencer has announced plans to introduce ground-breaking new eco-packaging which will keep its food fresher for longer.

The technology will extend the life of fruit stored in a fridge by up to two days and will be used in strawberry punnets in a bid to cut waste.

Many businesses have sought to cut down on packaging or make it more recyclable in a bid to go green, with many turning to booklet labels to include the information they would previously have put on more excessive packaging.

"This new technology is a win-win for our customers – not only will their strawberries taste better for longer, but we really hope it will help them to reduce their food waste as they no longer need to worry about eating their strawberries as soon as they buy them," said Hugh Mowat, M&S agronomist.

Trials indicated that the new packaging could cut waste by as much as four per cent, a significant move in the organisation's bid to become the world's most sustainable retailer.
