Mintel predicts future trends in packaging 04/11/2011

Booklet labels and other space-saving ideas could become increasingly important in the future, new predictions on packaging trends have suggested.

Market research firm Mintel told Whole Foods magazine that it believes there will be some subtle changes over the coming year in order to improve the ways products are presented.

It explained that due to an increase in demand for sustainability, it is possible that foods such as cereals will be sold in bags alone, rather than in boxes too.

This could present challenges for design and marketing companies, although concertina-style Fix-a-Form labels may help with presenting large amounts of information in increasingly small spaces.

Mintel also said it believes there will be new attempts to redefine currently ambiguous terms like 'natural' on packaging.

Earlier in 2011, Richard Bull from a sealing machinery supplier told a Packaging Society debate that flawed designs and a lack of communication between designers and manufacturers are costing brands all over the world hundreds of millions of pounds, FoodManufacture.co.uk reported.
