Manufacturers will have to change the design process for their printed labels once new European Union (EU) legislation comes into force, it has been claimed.
Lorraine Eve, head of regulatory affairs for Ashbury Labelling, told FooodBev.com that the Provisions of Food Information to Consumers law will represent a key shift towards uniform food packaging information.
She explained that the biggest changes are likely to be compulsory nutrition declarations and minimum fonts for important information.
"The food and drink industry will have to fundamentally change the way they design their labels," Ms Eve commented.
However, the expert added that the changes should result in more consistent peelable labels and less confusion for shoppers, someting she will be discussing at a packaging conference in Brussels this week.
Back in May, Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation, the Children's Food Campaign and Which? wrote to government health secretary Andrew Lansley in a bid to encourage the government to enforce easy-to-understand food labels in Britain.
