A number of companies are considering taking part in a pilot scheme that would trial a new range of printed labels highlighting whether or not packaging is recyclable.
The pilot is being administered by GreenBlue - a non profit organisation that wants to see increased recycling rates for consumer goods packaging.
GreenBlue's new printed labels were an idea that spawned from a research paper entitled Labeling for Package Recovery.
As a result of the paper, a new voluntary label system was developed by GreenBlue's Sustainable Packaging Coalition.
The printed labels tell consumers exactly what can be recycled and how to go about ensuring that individual packaging components are re-used.
"Consumers are faced with a confusing landscape of recycling messages and instructions that are often inconsistent or misleading," said GreenBlue project manager Anne Bedarf.
She added that the new pilot scheme will discover whether a harmonised system will boost recycling figures.
In Ireland, LetsRecycle.com claimed that there was a 65 per cent increase in packaging recovery rates across the country during 2010.
