Some interesting comments have been added to the debate on whether or not we should be reducing the amount of packaging peelable labels are adhered to.
Most companies are trying to make their bags and boxes smaller, but Andrew Parry from Wrap claims this is the wrong approach.
"Increases in packaging of a couple of grams can prevent food waste that has a much bigger environmental impact," he said in an interview with Packaging Europe, suggesting waste does ten times more damage.
Angelika Christ from Fefco agreed that packaging is "a key element" in preventing spoilage and things being thrown away.
However, with the government warning this week that retailers need to crack down on excessive packaging or face laws forcing them to do so, increasing it may not be an option.
Instead, companies may want to make use of recyclable materials that keep food fresh and use sticky printed labels for product information.
