A doctor in the US has said he thinks that the pharma labels of certain types of steroids should feature warnings about eye conditions that may be caused as a result of taking them.
Jonathan Trobe from the University of Michigan has submitted a federal petition to get drug manufacturers to add information to their packaging in order to prevent chorioretinopathy.
This is a rare condition that causes distortion to vision and may eventually lead to blindness.
Many people are prescribed steroids including prednisone for cancer, arthritis and other conditions, but Dr Trobe pointed out that only two drug companies out of 12 list eye problems as a potential side-effect.
He recommended that anyone affected after taking steroids should see an eye specialist straight away.
Macmillan Cancer Support states on its website that long-term use of steroids can cause cataracts and other eye conditions, recommending that people see a doctor if they notice any problems.
