Frozen food manufacturers may have to change the serving information on their peelable labels after a survey revealed consumers could be unhappy with current guidance about portions.
Research carried out by the NPD Group found that one-third of the 'large' ready-meals that claim to have three or four servings inside are being eaten by either one or two individuals.
A quarter of respondents said they regularly eat packaged foods with 'two to three servings' marked on the printed labels by themselves.
This could mean that companies are not providing enough food and therefore not enough value for money.
Darren Seifer, food and beverage industry analyst at NPD, said manufacturers need to understand that different demographics "perceive frozen meals differently", suggesting they respond by catering for consumers "with the right products, flavours and marketing messages".
Young men were found to be currently most dissatisfied with portion sizes on ready-meals.
Earlier this month, the Institute of Grocery Distribution said ready-meals could be permitted to state on their packaging if they contain half a portion of fruit or vegetables.
