By the end of next year, tyres will come with printed labels featuring information for road users and maintenance companies.
The move is part of a European Union regulation designed to help people to make decisions about the quality of the products they buy and will apply to all tyres manufactured after July 2012 and on sale after November 2012.
Similar to those found on household appliances, the peelable labels will feature coloured bands showing wet grip, rolling resistance and noise, with the first two measured from A to G.
This will apply to tyres for cars, SUVs, vans and trucks.
It may be hoped that the new measures will improve road safety and cut down on the number of inferior products in use.
Last month, Mytyres.co.uk found that more than 1.9 million second-hand tyres were fitted to cars in the past year, but many were illegally worn and potentially dangerous.
