Printed labels for alcohol 'should feature drink driving warnings' 30/11/2011

The printed labels on alcoholic drinks should feature warnings that will prevent motorists from being tempted to drink and drive.

This is according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), which is kicking off its safety campaign for the festive season this week.

It states that drink driving killed 380 people in 2009 and seriously injured 1,490 others.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: "Drink driving is an epidemic on our roads. We want to see clear drink driving warnings that are just as hard-hitting as health warnings on cigarette labels."

He added that if drinks companies will not comply, the organisation believes a compulsory system of labelling would be "compelling".

In July, Bruce Clark from Melton, whose son died in 1999 from alcohol poisoning, told the Melton Weekly he also believes that more warnings about the dangers of alcohol need to be added to printed labels of drinks to protect people.
