R&D activity continues to rise in US 13/04/2011

Record numbers of US pharmaceutical labels could be created this year, as a raft of new cancer drugs are under review.

The US Food and Drug Administration has received 887 new forms of medication to run the rule over - more than double the amount predicted six years ago, Pharma Times Online reports.

A range of drugs designed to treat various forms of cancer have been developed by members of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.

Chief executive at the organisation John Castellani told the publication the sudden deluge of medication has come because discoveries have been made into the way cancer cells develop.

A number of newly-designed products have taken these findings on board and aim to restrict the growth of cancer cells.

According to IMAP's 2011 Healthcare Industry Global Report, the pharmaceutical industry saw 548 transactions in 2010, with the US leading the way, having amassed $25.6 billion (£15.73 billion) from its 114 deals.
