Research and development 'needs to become more efficient' 13/05/2011

An expert on the pharmaceutical industry has suggested that research and development (R&D) needs to become more efficient if pharma labels are to be applied to new cures for lasting health problems.

Richard Bergstrom, a spokesperson for the life sciences R&D partnership the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), said the organisation aims to speed up the development of new medicines across Europe through the use of data sharing and knowledge management.

However, he added that the process needs to become more efficient if Europe is to be more competitive.

"The primary focus needs to advance from idea generation and move towards developing marketed drugs, with more emphasis on human testing and regulatory approval," Mr Bergstrom commented.

IMI work is ongoing at present towards developing drugs for antibacterial resistance, influenza, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

In March 2011, it was revealed that Roche was the pharmaceutical sector leader for R&D, spending $9.1 billion (£5.6 billion) in 2009.
