A seafood industry group has warned that proposed changes to the printed labels on its products could be problematic.
According to Seafish, policymakers in Europe are keen to extend the eco label requirement to "food, feed and drink", the Grocer reports.
However, operations director John Harman believes that if this idea is implemented, it will make meeting the labelling requirements unnecessarily complex for firms in the seafood sector.
"In terms of seafood, we are keen to mitigate the potential confusion and the burden on an industry already saturated with varying legal requirements around labelling," he commented.
Mr Harman noted that any such scheme must add value and be introduced correctly.
Indeed, he stressed that customers could stop trusting retailers if labelling mistakes end up being made.
Mr Harman was speaking shortly after John Whitehead, chairman of Seafish, was reappointed for another year, which he said would be a "key" period for the organisation.
