The rapid proliferation of smartphone technology is helping to boost the number of packaging firms using intelligent QR Codes.
According to Bob Bentz of Advanced Telecom Services, the trend is likely to continue and more businesses will get on board as smartphone manufacturers increase their market share.
Speaking at the recent World Telemedia Show in Amsterdam, Mr Bentz noted that in the US alone smartphone penetration stands at 38 per cent, but this will increase to 55 per cent within a year.
During his Hip to Be Square: Using QR Codes to Maximize Sales presentation, Mr Bentz said: "The growth of smartphone penetration, coupled with the increased understanding of how to scan a QR code will contribute to the increased use of the QR code."
Growth in the uptake of QR code printed labels is less certain than the growth being witnessed in the smartphone market.
According to recent research form comScore, just 6.2 per cent of Americans have scanned such a printed label.
However, Mark Donovan, comScore's senior vice president of mobile, told CosmeticsDesign.com that QR codes were great for providing additional information to consumers.
