A supermarket chain is making changes to the printed labels on its products to stop food going to waste.
According to Sainsbury's, it has a responsibility to try to minimise food waste as much as it can.
Therefore, it is to stop asking consumers to freeze food items on the day they have been purchased.
Beth Hart, the firm's head of product technology for fresh and frozen, said this is because there is "no food safety reason why it cannot be frozen at any point prior to the use-by date".
She noted that this point was recently flagged up by a shopper, who told her the advice is pointless because the product does not know the day on which it has been purchased.
This could prompt other major food retailers in Britain to consider making changes to their food labels as well.
Estimates from Sainsbury's suggest the move could stop about 800,000 tonnes of food being wasted every year.
