Toy manufacturers may be prompted to look more closely at the packaging they attach their printed labels to, after Mattel announced it is to become more environmentally-friendly.
The creator of Barbie dolls was criticised by Greenpeace in June for allegedly using materials that depleted Indonesian rainforests.
Now, it has said it is to increase the amount of recycled and sustainable fibres it uses by 70 per cent by the end of 2011 and by 85 per cent to the end of 2015.
Spokesperson for Mattel Lisa Marie Bongiovanni said: "This is a process of continuous improvement for us. This is just the beginning step for us on this issue."
Mattel has already eliminated the wire ties it used to use to secure toys to their boxes.
This comes after Coca-Cola announced last month that it is to attach its printed labels for 500ml Coca-Cola, Diet Coke and Coke Zero to recycled bottles in a bid to become more green.
