New information on the printed labels of light bulbs in the US could prompt changes to their packaging in this country.
Under new Federal Trade Commission rules, manufacturers must follow legislation from January 1st 2012 that relates to providing consumers with details about energy usage, Tulsa World reports.
For example, the brightness will begin to be measured in lumens rather than watts, while the estimated yearly energy cost will also be printed.
More information on the printed labels will relate to how long the bulb should last based on three hours' use per day, as well as whether the appearance of the light will be warm or cool.
It is hoped this will help people to choose the most efficient bulbs for their needs and to cut energy consumption, with traditional 75-watt, 60-watt and 40-watt bulbs to be phased out by 2014.
Earlier this month, Maryrose Sylvester from General Electric told Bloomberg she thinks 80 per cent of lighting will come from LED bulbs by 2020.
