The US has now joined the debate over whether clearer printed labels are necessary for meat products in order to inform consumers exactly what they are getting.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that bacon brands in the UK may have to change their packaging if new EU rules come in to force regarding water content.
While they are currently permitted to use ten per cent water without labelling it as an ingredient, the EU wants this to change to five per cent.
Now, the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service wants to make it compulsory for all meat that is enhanced with a salt-water solution to say so on clear printed labels.
Michael Jacobson from the Centre for Science in the Public Interest warned that some meats can contain five times as much salt as untreated cuts, meaning shoppers are getting a "stealth hit" of sodium as well as being cheated financially.
"Better labelling would help consumers concerned about high blood pressure, stroke, or heart disease avoid products that contribute to those diseases," he added.
