US supermarket helps blind customers with Braille printed labels 18/10/2011

A US chain of supermarkets has brought in measures to help blind customers, including printed labels with Braille on them.

Newtonville Whole Foods was prompted to start its Braille Independence Initiative by feedback from shopper Christie Goldenberg, whose visually-impaired son Joshua had trouble tracking down products he wanted to buy because they were not labelled, the Newton Patch reports.

Customer relations representative Terri Petrunyak met with the Goldenbergs and realised they could better cater for the blind community by labelling foods and shelf-edges with Braille.

The supermarket has started with fresh produce and will adapt the frozen and bakery sections next.

"This is really a demo project where we're doing a section at a time, evaluating what works and then we're going to determine how to better improve the next section," Ms Petrunyak commented.

This comes after the Woolton Sainsbury's store in Liverpool also introduced new signage and Braille printed labels in its aisles in a bid to help local blind people.
