Volcanic eruption 'could cause problems for asthmatics' 25/05/2011

Printed labels for extra asthma medication could be in demand over the next few days as a result of the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Grimsvotn.

The mountain began to spew out an ash cloud over the weekend and experts expect it to hover over the UK for the next few days.

Although it is not as serious as the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano last year, health professionals are warning that asthmatics may want to keep their medication close at hand in case they begin to suffer breathing problems.

"We would advise people living with a lung condition in affected areas to carry their medication as a precaution," said Dr Keith Prowse from the British Lung Foundation.

Some airports have been closed as a result of the ash cloud, but it is not expected to cause the widespread disruption that Eyjafjallajokull did in April 2010.

Holidaymakers were stranded after all British airports were closed, causing the most travel disruption since World War II.
