London marathon

An interview with our Virtual London Marathon runner

Michael Peachey, Pressroom Minder at Denny Bros, recently took part in this year’s very different Virtual London Marathon.

An estimated 43,000 people from 109 countries ran the 26.2 miles in their own surroundings and along their own routes – including elite athletes and those raising money for charity.

Michael, who used the event to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust https://www.teenagecancertrust.org/, talks to us about the experience.

Which charity did you run for and why?

I actually got a ballot spot (a ‘Golden Ticket’), but decided to run for the Teenage Cancer Trust because it is close to a few friends’ hearts and they have been very good to them. I have currently raised £2,300.

How did you find the experience of a virtual race?

It was very strange because I’m very competitive, so it was difficult running against myself. Fortunately, I had some good friends running and cycling with me. I enjoyed the experience and think they should continue with virtual events for people who don’t get in.

What were the best/worst parts of the day?

The worst part was definitely the nerves and the weather (it was one of the wettest weekends in history). The best part was running 26.2 miles – something that I have now crossed off my bucket list.

Will you be taking part in anymore marathons?

I have already signed up for two next year – so it definitely hasn’t put me off. Like I said, I am competitive and I have a time to beat!

How did you celebrate completing the challenge?

Beer, doughnuts and Chinese with my family – and in that order.
